What is a custodian?
A custodian is a financial institution that has legal responsibility for a customer’s securities.  Custodianship includes management as well as safekeeping, and this service incurs additional fees.

Our firm, like all investment managers, is required to have a custodian.  Investments that you entrust to our firm are placed in custody with Fidelity’s clearing firm, National Financial Services LLC (NFS) – one of the largest clearing providers in the industry.  A clearing firm is an organization that works with financial exchanges to handle the confirmation, delivery, and settlement of transactions.

When you’re selecting your financial advisor, considering who your advisor uses to custody your investments can be a critical factor, as this will help determine the level of service and support you can expect from your financial advisor.

What is ‘Managed Money’?  Why Separate Accounts?
Separate accounts are portfolios of individual securities that are managed independently by an institutional investment manager on your behalf.   A ‘separate account’ that provides active portfolio management – tailored to your needs – from institutional investment managers, may provide that added level of confidence and peace of mind that many are looking for in today’s volatile markets.

Growing interest in Separate Accounts
Originally introduced in late 1996, assets in separately managed accounts have grown at an average rate of nearly 30% according to the Money Management Institute.  At the end of 2003, assets held in these types of accounts industry-wide topped the half-trillion-dollar mark for the first time, ending the year at $508 Billion.  Industry researchers predict total assets to grow to nearly $2.2 Trillion by 2011.  They found “separately managed accounts are growing in popularity due to the appeal of flexibility, customized service and advice.”

How Separate Accounts compare to mutual funds

Like mutual funds, separate accounts offer the benefits of professional money management.  Unlike mutual funds, however, these portfolios often provide much greater asset allocation and diversification.  According to Ibbotson Associates, asset allocation is the primary determinant of overall returns, while diversification simply means ‘lots of different eggs in lots of different baskets.’

A separate account also provides the following additional features:
